Aufruf zum Stricken für die Kunst - Call for participation in an art knitting project

Die australische Künstlerin Kate Just ist für drei Monate in Kremser Kunsthalle und gestaltet dort Ihre Ausstellung "Venus von Willendorf". Für eben dieses Strickprojekt sucht sie nach mitwirkenden Strickerinen, die ihr helfen, riesige Buchstaben aus Karton umzustricken. Jeder Buchstabe aus dem Wort "V E N U S" stehe für ein Stricksymbol und stellt somit die Verbindung zum Stricken her.

Gestrickt soll werden:

NUR mit herkömmlichem SPAGAT (verfügbar in allen Bauhäusern oder bei Libro),

egal welche Stärke,

in einem beliebigen Strickmuster,

ein oder mehrere Strickteile in folgenden Dimensionen:

Breite x Länge:

20cm x 110cm

20 cm x 90cm

20cm x 26cm

20 x 20cm

Die Künstlerin refundiert allen Mitwirkenden die Einkaufskosten für das Material, wenn jemand lediglich von zu Hause aus stricken möchte. Weiters werden alle Mitwirkenden in dem Projektverzeichnis namentlich genant, werden außerdem zur Eröffnung der Ausstellung eingeladen und gehen mit ihrem Wirken in die Geschichte des Projektes ein.

An diesem Projekt beteiligen sich schon einige Wienerinen, grundsätzlich können aber alle, gerne auch StrickeriInnen aus Ausland, teilnehmen. Zwei Treffen zum gemeinsamen Stricken stehen ebenso fest: 17.09.2011 ab 14:00h im Burggarten Wien, bei Schlechtwetter im dortigen Palmenhaus, bzw. 24.09.2011 ab 14:00h in Krems, Lokation wird noch bekanntgegeben. Stricknadel mitbringen!

An beiden Treffen wird Spagat von der Künstlerin zur Verfügung gestellt bzw. die Einkaufskosten dafür rückerstattet.

Abgabetermin der gestrickten Teile ist bis spätestens 5.10.11, bzw. je früher, desto besser.

Natürlich konnte ich diesem Aufruf nicht widerstehen. Ich hatte ja noch nie zuvor mit Spagat gestrickt! Und es geht gar viel einfacher, als ich anfangs dachte. Spaß pur. So schaut ein fertiger Teil ín Größe 20x26cm aus. Gusto bekommen? Dann freue ich mich auf viele Mitwirkende!

Of course I coudn't resist to participate in this project. Certainly it was a challenge, because I haven't ever knitted with brown twine yet. First thought was, this would be tricky and hard to knit, but it wasn't.  It was fun. This is a finished piece having dimensions 20x26cm. Did I intrigued you? Well, join in then.

dear knitter

i am an artist from australia doing an art residency and large solo exhibition centering on knitting and the venus of willendorf at the factory, kunsthalle, krems on october 15, 2011.

for this exhibition i have knitted my own skin in full and will have videos, sculptures and collages centring on an archaeology of the female body.

an important work in this show is a large cardboard sculpture made of five pieces that spells VENUS in knitting symbols. i want to cover each letter of this sculpture with knitted twine (ie the thick brown thread used to tie up packages). i am using this twine because it is thick and brown and references the knitted looking cap on the head of the venus of willendorf.

however my project is big and i need some help! i am looking for knitters who would be willing to contribute a scarf sized piece of knitting in any pattern or knitting gauge (thick, chunky, tight, small or even very loopy knitting on very large needles is fine!) to 'dress' my venus sculpture. all contributors will be listed on the room sheet in the catalogue, will be invited to the opening event, and will become part of the history of this work. if people are interested to come to krems to participate in one day of knitting and fun during which time we can all meet and also make the work, this is something i would love to arrange with curators ( though i can also i can travel to vienna). however if people even just want to contribute a piece of knitting by mail this would be most welcome!

The VENUS sculpture I refer to is not a figure but is the word V E N U S spelled out in giant cardboard box letters. Each letter takes the form of abstract knitting symbols which already resemble real letters. I'm not sure if you have seen these knitting symbols but for example a V is the symbol for a slipped stitch and a three pronged fork like shape will be the E, which is a knitting symbol for knitting three stitches together, the N is the symbol for knitting 2 stitches together etc.

I am asking all the participants (including me) to only knit with brown twine, in german this is called Hanfbindfaden or SPAGAT and comes in different thicknesses at the LIBRO shops or hardware stores. I chose this because it is natural and organic and of a similar tone to the venus. it will 'dress' the sculpture/letters in a way that resembles the knobby woollen looken hat or hair that the venus of willendorf has.

Though I want people to use twine, I am happy for people to knit in any size needles from very large to very small (I am knitting a very loopy, see through piece right now on size 12 needles!) and in any pattern (I am trying both garter stitch and berry stitch because this is like the VENUS hat/hair). I just like the idea that knitters use their favourite pattern or choose one they think fits the venus of willendorf and their own preferences of handiwork (lacework or neat or tiny or wild and organic etc) are visible in changes throughout the covering. Even the simplest plain knitted section would be most welcome! In the end these very different knitted pieces would be joined together like a quilt which covers the letters.

The knitted sections which will make up the letters can be a range of different sizes.

They could be approximately

20cm wide x 110cm

20 cm wide x 90cm long

20cm wide x 26cm

or 20 x 20cm

I am happy for people to change the pattern or even size of needles within any one section they are working on and give me pieces large or small (or multiple). the deadline is the 5 october but the more quickly i get pieces the better!

I will either supply the spagat to knitters who come to a public event or can reimburse them the costs if they buy their own.
