Zugmaschen * Travelling twisted stitches

Techniktipp – Zugmaschen kreuzen ohne Hilfsnadel

Travelling twisted stitches (“Zugmaschen”) are a special knitting technique used in Alpine area, in which two or more twisted stitches are crossed in each row without additional cable needle. This technique is typically used in knitted Alpine folk garments especially socks, which are knitted in the round. Twisted stitches often coincide with the terms "travelling" and "charting row by row". To chart row by row means that a stitch pattern is worked in each row (right and wrong side row) of the knitting chart. When knitting in the round, chart is simply obeyed row by row, because each round is actually right side row and is therefore read as shown in the chart from right to left and is also knitted that way.

The travelling twisted stitches get their distinctive look only if knitted through the back of the loop. Therefore, the proper execution of all stitches (knit st, purl st, knit tbl, purl tbl) is an asset for a perfect stitch definition.
Charting row by row sets requirements on knitting charts which must be simplified accordingly to maintain the overview of the many crossings in each row. In case that sock patterns are diverted from their original use and are used for knitting jackets, wrong side rows are inevitable. The wrong side rows in the knitting chart are actually read left to right, but all stitches and all crossings are knitted reversed. This means literally that a knit stitch turns to purl st, ktbl turns to ptbl, right crossing turns to left crossing and so on, reverting each single stitch and crossing direction of the knitting chart shown in your mind. In the wrong side rows chart shows always a result of the work on the right side.
In the knitting font the twisted stitches are therefore uniformly displayed by a  V  in all rows. In the right side rows this font is knitted as knit stitch through the back of the loop ( k1 tbl ) and in the wrong side rows as a purl stitch through the back of the loop ( p1 tbl ).

The direction, in which the twisted stitch is crossed with the foregoing or the following stitch, is marked in the chart with a line between the rows either slanted to the right or to the left. If the line is placed in one specific row between two twisted stitches, this stands for a simple 2-st left or right crossing through the back of the loop.

Technique know-how - Travelling twisted stitches without cable needle

Push two stitches that have to be crossed to the very tip of the left hand needle (LHN). First, the second stitch on the LHN is always either worked right away or lifted with the right hand needle (RHN) as for purl and in both cases do not slip it from the LHN. Second, hold tight both stitches on their base with the index finger and the thumb of the right hand, in order to prevent runs, and after that slip both stitches from the LHN. While dropping them from the LHN, stitches re-order and cross automatically, since the second stitch has already been knitted or lifted on the RHN and the first stitch is off from both needles. The dropping of stitches takes advantage of the yarn tension to achieve the desired re-order and crossing effect. After that follow the stitch pattern. If the second stitch was knitted right away to RHN, just pick up the slipped first stitch by LHN and then knit in pattern. If the second stitch was only lifted to RHN, than pick up dropped 1st st  to LHN first, than slip lifted stitch from RHN back to LHN, which executes re-ordering of the stitches, and then knit in pattern.

The crossing is  always executed in this very simple manner, no matter if the twisted stitch is followed by a knit st, by a purl stitch or another twisted stitch. The same principle applies if any kind of stitch is foregoing to twisted stitch and also regardless of whether the crossings are executed in right side rows or wrong side rows. However it is important, to lay the working yarn to the front if the second stitch on LHN, which always initiates the crossing, is a purl, or a purl tbl one, and to lay the working yarn to the back, if the second stitch is a knit, a knit tbl or just a lifted one.

For travelling stitches to the right knit until 1 stitch before twisted stitch, then start crossing. For travelling stitches to the left knit until the twisted stitch, then start crossing.

If all that sounds fairly confusing have a look at above video which is more explanatory than 1000 words.

Trachtenjacke - Alpine folklore cardy

There is probably no other garment which so easily reflects the whole artistry of the knitting craft in such a striking way as the folklore, alpine style jacket does. Even the most unimpressive yarn morphes through stitches, shape, details and finishing into an effective eye-catching design. For this one I was up to experiment so I diverted common sockyarn from its intended use and was very pleased with outcome. The cables remind of wrapped candies. The Viennese call them "Zuckerl" [ tṣ u k err l ] and so it comes to its name. Apart from perfect complement for alpine folklore fashion, this cardy fits very well both skirts and jeans. It does not stress being skratchy, it does not pill and it stands its ground in demanding workaday life, being very warm and little weighted.

Not keen on knitting socks? Well than, here is the option: one totally sweet folklore jacket instead of four pair of socks.

Have you ever marvelled at Ascot hats? Some of them are amazing creations. What a lucky convinience that event takes place in summer. There’s no limit to designer’s creativity when it comes to shape, choice of materials and weather-suitability. What would all ladies wear, if summer suddenly turned to winter, as it had already quite often happened  lately?

A knitted beret would be most adorable! But how to transform a knitted beret into a hat ready for Ascot?

This project was all about shape, stability, wearability, warmth and chic. It resulted in a small production run of 10 de-luxe berets, which are worthy to be called hats. Majorily hand knitted with double-layers-technique, elaborately designed and finished with ornamental appliqués. There is no specific front. You can rotate them and wear them as you like. This aspect of flexible wearability provides various visual impressions.

***
It lasted for nearly one hundred years (oh well, at least I felt that way) until this work got finished. Since start in Nov last year I did several experiments with shaping, stitches and various ideas, none of them I liked much. She has been kissed awake now. Sleeping Beauty is a shortie coat with raglan shaping, worked all over with short rows. Six different yarn qualities in eight different colours were used, working yarn varied from 2-ply-threaded up to 8-ply-threaded and it was knitted flat with 7.0mm needles. Needles to say that tailoring of plush fur was a fluffing experience. Not even your beloved pet would shed so much hair all over as this did. But now ... these luxurious appliqués invite to snuggle into it and enjoy.

Dark Veda

Black. A color connected with evil, death and sorrow.
Synonym for aspects of depth, downward movement, and darkness. In religious issues it refers to a concrete world lying under the earth full of beings connected with the dark: demons, sinners, rivals, enemies, ancestors and diseased persons.

Well...I find black simply elegant.

Schwarz.

"KlugeStrickArt" in Wien

- Gabriele Kluge
- Margitta Biallas
- Dr. Gabriela Drauschke
- Marion Siepermann
- Petra Feurstein.

Hoffe sehr, ich habe alle erwähnt.

"Gegenspieler" von Dr. Gabriela Drauschke
"Opponent" by Dr. Gabriela Drauschke

"KlugeStrickArt" (Art knitting by Gabriele Kluge) held an initial showing at Vienna from Dec 4th till Dec 8th held as the opening of an art exhibition, which turned out very inspirational to a chosen audience.  The last one was a colourful mixture of the most different professions (practicing doctors, financiers, knitters, businessmen, their families and friends) and they all had very much fun juring the opening reception on 4th December. The organizer, GPC gamma capital partners AG, and its host Mrs. Petra Feurstein, who is a member of Knitting Academy founded by Gabriele Kluge, did their best. The murals were presented in a very professional way, each galery would have been jealous of so much competition. In addition to it, the integration of murals in all rooms with a touch of Christmass decoration set a stylish atmospheare and a delicious dinner buffet indulged in culinary delights. The opening reception was a great success. The audience marveled at murals, beeing envolved and deaply fascinated by their beauty and harmony. Everybody was very interested in details of the knitting technique, there were lot of questions about how the murals were done and about the story behind it.

On the next day the star of the evening and knitting genious Mrs. Gabriele Kluge started her knitting classes for advanced learners with a theme "Spirals" which lasted for two days. Thereafter beginner's cources started and were offered to all interested knitters in two different topics.

I joined the spiral knitting class and worked on my learning swatch being in the hot seat just like an novice knitter, not having a clue what am I knitting until the very last hour of the classes when I finally reached enlightenment. Now I'll be working on my next mural with a theme "Spirals". It will be totaly different from murals shown at the exhibition and of course it will be one of a kind. This is so exiting about this technique that it enables a big capability of expression.

There was so much rush during the opening reception that I could not make good pictures of it. But I was thankfull for peaceful minutes in the breaks of knitting classes and made some impressions that I can share with you. You can see there murals of the following artists:

- Gabriele Kluge
- Margitta Biallas
- Dr. Gabriela Drauschke
- Marion Siepermann
- Petra Feurstein.

Hope, I didn't forget anybody.
